There is an active and ongoing discussion here in Kansas about the
creation of a horse trail system in the "Flint Hills" region of our
state. The Kansas "Flint Hills" make up the last vestige of the "tall
grass" prairie in our country. I am a professor at Kansas State
University and I've taken up the task to try to determine...at a
national level...if horseback riders from across this country would be
interested in riding their horses on a "trails system" that has the
potential to run for hundreds of miles "in total" across this last stand
of rolling prairie. I have attached a link to a short survey instrument
(8 questions) that will help us determine national interest in this
proposed "trails system". I ask that upon your review, you forward this
email to your AERC members to obtain their input on this important
matter.

National competitive trail mileage record holder Elmer Bandit, 38, passed away on February 14th, 2010. Elmer was euthanized after he was found unable to rise in the pasture of his Independence, Mo. stable. Elmers lifetime mileage in competitive trail riding is 20,780 miles. He won numerous National Championships in his 34-year career. Elmer's lifelong owner is Mary Anna Wood.

 It was a dark and stormy morning that October 23, 1887 as Wabash westbound train #5 pulled out of the station in Moberly, Missouri at 2:39 AM. It was running about 25 minutes late carrying mail to Kansas City. Engine 1299, a small engine known as a “small Healey” was pulling 9 cars. This engine, rebuilt not long back, was used for both passenger and freight and was capable of speeds well above 50 MPH on good track. It had been raining during the night but perhaps that was ending. Experienced Engineer John Mathias was at the throttle and this was to be his last run though he didn’t know it.

The City of Gladstone is including new bicycle lanes and sidewalks on several upcoming road projects, according to an article in the Sun Tribune .
I spoke with Interim Public Works Director Tim Nebergall, who indicated the plans are for five-foot bicycle lanes on the segments of Broadway, Old Pike and 76th Street.
The overall plan is to tie in with the on-street bicycle and trails
plans of Kansas City, Missouri (which surrounds Gladstone) and with the
MetroGreen plan, which KCMO is also working on.
