Trail work volunteers met at Sue Magierowski's house to discuss the upcoming NATRC ride, Adopt-A-Trail, and trail maintenance.  Areas that have been adopted to date are 22-23 (Beth Buckrucker), 20-21 (Becky Silcott), 20-31 (Mike Cordell and family).  Lynn Crader has not responded for a possible re-adoption of a section, leaving four sections in need of adoptors.  The bigger problem will be finding persons to mow trail sections.  Clay County Parks will take Horse Camp to Jack Rabbit Bend, including the shoreline trail north of Collin's this year.  Dave Thompson has elected to mow 23-24.  The Cordell family has graciously agreed to mow 20-31 if we will present a letter of intent to them so they will not get in trouble for having machinery on Corps land.  Paul Dauschmidt may take 20-21 if asked.  This leaves four sections unconfirmed for mowing. The hot topic was the NATRC Ride scheduled for Smithville Lake Horse Trail in May.  The concern is that trails are in bad shape after a wet year last year, and 100 horses racing along the trail will only make things worse if it continues to stay wet.  Discussion included asking the Corps not to approve the ride permit, asking NATRC representatives to help with problem areas on the trail, or do nothing.  Not everyone agreed, but more folks thought the ride should continue as planned, but wage an information campaign to let folks know that volunteers take care of the trail....not "the government" as many folks think. Maintenance problems along the trail are the Thanksgiving Bridge, Krueger Creek Crossing, the shoreline trail between the 168th St. and the Everett Suiters Scenic Loop.  Some discussion ensued on how to fix these problems.  Materials needed for trail repairs include lots and lots of hay bales, about 50 sacks of concrete (Lowe's donation?), and a 36" diameter pipe for JRB.  Sandy Hank, and Everett Suiter were mentioned for possible acquisitors for concrete and pipe. Ruth has heard of a government person that can come to assist in trail maintenance training.  More information is needed.  Mo. Department of Conservation in Liberty may also be available for particular problem areas.   A big pot of chili was provided compliments of Sue Magierowski, and cooked by Ben Magierowski.  Evelyn Thompson brought two apple pies.  The Olson's brought a cheese plate.  Ruth brought crackers. Present were Sue Magierowski, Dave Thompson, Evelyn Thompson, Steve Olson, Carol Olson, Ruth Franklin, Steve Rice, Dave Kitchen.

July 23, 2009  Volunteers met on 172nd St. entrance to the trail, west of C Highway.   Paul used his tractor to set an 18” pipe in the creek crossing near the well between W and X.  Dave Thompson brought his Bobcat UTV to transport tools and volunteers.  Paul also improved the drainage in a muddy bog at letter W, and added more dirt onto the twin pipe crossing north of X on the combined trail.  All disturbed areas were mowed.  The lost letter W post was found along the edge of a pond.
